The Russian reference seems just to be thrown in there, but maybe it is based on a guess using the fellow’s name. The stereotype of Russian orphanages is based on the Communist mass production concept that one size fits all. There are lots of kids, few caretakers, little or no individual attention.
Read the article and there is no reference to any religious influence in the young man’s life. Never been exposed to the concept of loving God above all things and loving your neighbor as yourself.
