The saying goes, "Never say never," and despite saying never in the past, it seems Jerry Seinfeld may be changing his tune about a Seinfeld reboot/revival. When Seinfeld stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss Comedians in Cards Getting Coffee, which will feature Ellen DeGeneres, the talk show host asked Seinfeld about the recent uptake in sitcom revivals.
"All these sitcoms are having a resurgence," DeGeneres says. "Roseanne is doing it, I heard Murphy Brownis that really true, Murphy Brown is doing it?"
"Murphy Brown? And Candice Bergen is coming back?" Seinfeld asks. "I think I know where you're going with this, but why don't you finish it."
"Well," DeGeneres says to her guest, "do you think, Jerry, there would be a possibility that Seinfeld would come back?"
"It's possible," Seinfeld says before getting cut off by thunderous audience applause. "Oh, they like the idea."
Seinfeld and the show's co-creator Larry David have been asked about bringing his beloved series back from the dead before. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Seinfeld said he was not interested in picking back up with the series as David then planned to do with Curb Your Enthusiasm.
"But we did have an offerI won't say who fromto do a new, live episode of Seinfeld on TV," Seinfeld told THR. Did he consider it? "No."
In 2017, when asked whether the show would come back in any form, Seinfeld told Entertainment Tonight, "Why? Maybe it's nice that you continue to love it instead of us tampering with something that went pretty well."
The cast, which includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards, reunited for a fake Seinfeld reunion as part of an arc on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm.
DeGeneres recently asked Jennifer Aniston about a Friends reunion, another show that constantly gets reunion rumors swirling, whether by fake movie trailers or just simply the former costars going to dinner.
"Anything is a possibility, Ellen," Aniston said. "Anything! Right? I mean, George Clooney got married That's like an anything can happen."
The other Friends stars and co-creator Marta Kauffman have been pretty adamant about the reunion possibilities. "There will never be a Friends reunion movie," Kauffman said at a 2016 TCA panel. Kauffman has said that line for years, "Friends was about that time in your life when your friends are your family and once you have a family, there's no need anymore," she told E! News.
Murphy Brown and Roseanne are just the latest revived classic TV shows waiting in the wings. NBC found success with Will & Grace. Fox has brought back The X-Files, 24 and Prison Break after all three ended. Meanwhile, CBS is working on reboots of Cagney and Lacey, as well as Magnum P.I. after successfully rebooting both Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver.
Seinfeld is now streaming on Hulu.
It was hilarious but it was a snapshot in time, culturally speaking. It was a time before smartphones, social media, internet dating, uber. A time when friends met and neighbors talked.
I agree with you. My life is made better by Seinfeld existing. We reference it probably weekly around here. But I dont want to ruin it by dragging them all back out. Its done. It was excellent.
I always loved the Seinfeld show...including Kramer. So I hope, if there would be a revival, Michael Richards would be included.
It would be a mistake to start it up again.
It will never be the same, as it set the tone for comedy shows to come.
I honestly hope they don’t do it.
Not the biggest reason why they should not do this.
Jerry, George and Elaine will have kids and Jerry’s will act like George and George’s will act like Jerry and Elaine’s will act like Kramer.
Newman’s kid will look like a potato.
Are you kidding. Seinfeld had a unique, self-deprecating and sardonic humor to him. It was totally his own, and his show is legendary. Still watch it on Hulu and it's STILL better than 90% of the crap out there now.
Kraemer (Michael Richards) is a no go because he used the “N” Word in a Comedy Routine Years ago, or something.
He is persona non grata and Seinfeld would be raked over the coals for hiring him.
The show had some humor. Credit his co stars and writing. But, watch his stand up routines - he’s not funny.
Never watched the first one...won’t watch any revival.
George Castanza was very irritated that people type-cast him in that role. Wah.
Anyone ever notice that Julia Dreyfus’ laugh on Seinfeld is the same EXACT laugh as Mary Livingston on the Jack Benny Show?
it’s STILL better than 90% of the crap out there now.
We still watch every night and I still cannot believe how funny it is.
And the cell phones....they are so big!! LOL
That’s probably the best compliment you can pay Seinfeld.
There are episodes I’ve seen 35 times, yet I still burst out in open gut-laughter when I watch them.
A reboot will never be able to top that.
Richards has a racism problem that the PC world will tear them apart for.
