My first reaction was to think this was a portrait of a white or light skinned hispanic person. And the hair does not look at all like a black woman’s hair - it isn’t even black, but rather more reddish. I would honestly believe this was a white woman in the protrait, if I didn’t know better. Gone are so many of the features that make Michele a black woman. This is just weird to me.

Good Lord, it's just artless and tasteless. Besides being very poorly and amateurishly painted, it doesn't even pretend to evoke any visual similarity to Michelle Obama. It really does look like a high school art project. I just read the NYT article about it, and, amidst all the predictable NYT fawning, is this revelation about the "artist": "Ms. Sherald, who until a few years ago made her living waiting tables, oversees a studio staff of one, herself." Yep, sounds about right.
