It takes a lot to anger the Dutch, but NBCs Katie Couric managed to strike a nerve over comments she made during the Opening Ceremonies.
Now, most people just watch the color and pageantry rather than focusing on the announcers, but Courics reasoning for why the Netherlands is so dominant in speedskating stopped everyone. Couric mentioned Amsterdams canals and pointed out that skating is an important mode of transportation when the canals freeze over.
The opening ceremonies is about the only thing we watch concerning the Olympics. My wife complains that I am too cynical about things on TV, including commentary about the opening. I kept saying, “I wish these guys would just SHUT UP and let the pageantry happen!” But noooo... we can’t have dead air obviously, so they had to say something - even have the so-called Asian expert on to add color to the commentary...
... so in just a few days, what do we have? Asian expert canned (for telling the truth), and not Katie in hot water. It’s going to get to a point where no one wants to be on for the opening. After all, NBC won’t have your back. Anything (and I mean ANYTHING) said can and will be used against you. They’ll bend over backwards to keep everyone except the American audience happy.
She should just close her “two-lips’ and skate away!
Apparently, many people are not watching the broadcast. I suspect that Couric is a big reason.
Johnny Weir(do), actually makes me miss Dick Button.
“the affable Eva Braun of morning television.”
- Ann Coulter
Ann doesn’t have a whole lot of fans here on FR, but I like her. And zingers like that one is why.
In Dutch with the Dutch, eh?
It’s the same here in Texas. Oops, my wife is home. I have to go help her unsaddle her horse.
As a half PA Dutchman (my mom was Amish), I was chust about to make a comment about my brethren. But I need to throw the horse over the fence some hay once.
They consider us to be unsophisticated, uneducated, provincial boors.
But where did she get her insight and understanding of the Dutch culture?
From a 1930 Movietone News feature on the windmills of the Netherlands?
LOL
Exactly, they are so out of touch in their echo chamber. I think her comment would make the average elementary school kid scratch their head.
