NBC’s Katie Couric is in hot water with the Dutch, who really don’t skate everywhere

It takes a lot to anger the Dutch, but NBC’s Katie Couric managed to strike a nerve over comments she made during the Opening Ceremonies.

Now, most people just watch the color and pageantry rather than focusing on the announcers, but Couric’s reasoning for why the Netherlands is so dominant in speedskating stopped everyone. Couric mentioned Amsterdam’s canals and pointed out that skating is “an important mode of transportation” when the canals freeze over.

Te tweets from the Dutch after the stupid comment were hilarious; couric is truly an embarassment.

A decade ago Miss Catie called the St. Andrews cross on the Confederate battle standard the Confederate Cross. I had to laugh but was incredulous at her stupidity.

She must have seen “Hans Brinker And The Silver Skates” as a child.

To be fair, she was probably remembering reading ‘Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates’ when she was a kid. ; )

I stopped watching a long time ago, but I walk by televisions and see commercials and the occasional programming from them.

You would think women are the only ones competing in the Olympics.

I know it is all marketing, but I find it irritating.

> Yes, and the reason they do so well at golf is the plethora of miniature-golf courses that dot the land. <

I had to think for a moment about that. Then I got it. Anyway, I started this thread. And so I get to pick the best comment. You're the winner!

Everything she knows about the Dutch she learned from Hans Brinker. Ethnic stereotypes are much easier to rely on than actual facts. It’s what the media does.

I can't believe no one's said this yet:

She's 'in Dutch' with the Dutch?

I am not watching the Olympics, but the Missus is, so I hear bits and pieces of it. I’m old enough to remember watching the 1968 Olympics, and think of that as the watershed year when the “up close and personal” crap started working its way into what had theretofore been straightforward coverage of sporting events. Today the coverage is one long “up close and personal” presentation only occasionally and briefly interrupted by actual sporting competition. The Olympics Organizing Committee has a good understanding of the intellectual property that is media coverage of the Olympic Games. They may want to get some better control over the media content and approach, before, like the NFL they commit brand suicide by allowing this drift into overly dramatized, derivative and politicized coverage. Word up.

Katie lives in a bubble.

People outside of NYC and LA don't take subways or drive their cars. Therefore those poor folk outside her bubble must skate or ski or canoe or walk or bike to where they want to go. Oh, and Sarah Palin is really stupid because she lives in a place where you have to snowshoe to work and there is no diversity.
