I know people who had horribly abuse and dismissive fathers, including hitting 2-year-olds on the head. They struggle with anger and attachment, but they can reach truth.
That sort of early/continuing experience is horribly damaging, but not everyone who experiences it is a dead loss.
Sounds sappy, but unconditional love later on in life can help. As can Christ.
