No, I believe you're referring to the new iPhone X, with a face contour mapping scanner. The story I remember was two Chinese women. They found the phone would let either one of them use it after only the owner had scanned herself in to the facial recognition system.
In China (where there are a billion+ Chinese people to put in the system) there is a boasted 99.77% success rate.
But yes, in the west, less success with Asian faces in addition to black faces.
