An unknown gunman killed a man driving a sports car early Wednesday on Interstate 95, but it remained unclear whether shooter was a random sniper.
The gunman had not been found late Wednesday. Police released few details about the crime, except to say they believe Edvin Milkevic, 29, of Boca Raton, was shot while driving on the highway.
A Florida Highway Patrol trooper at a nighttime paving job on I-95 heard a crash near the Yamato Road exit about 4:30 a.m. The black Nissan 370 Z had hit a construction barrel and drove up the west side of the grassy swale on the west side of the highway. The trooper found Milkevic bleeding inside the car, said Boca Raton police spokesman Mark Economou.
Milkevic died at Delray Medical Center. The highway was closed for four hours during the morning rush hour as police investigated.
We do know the individual was shot in the vehicle and where that took place, we dont know, Economou said. Shots could have come from outside [the car].
Milkevic had been a lawyer in his native Lithuania until coming to the United States 10 years ago and had worked at Pasta and Ristorante Italiano in Margate as an assistant manager for five, six or seven years, according to the restaurants owner, Luigi Marenco.
He said Milkevic worked at the restaurant on Tuesday and would have closed up about 10:30 p.m.
This is really incredible, because he was a really good boy, said Marenco, who was on his way to offer condolences to Milkevics parents on Wednesday afternoon. He was a good worker, a good guy.
The restaurant was closed Wednesday. A note on the door said the restaurant would be closed until further notice, We had an emergency and are sorry for any inconvenience.
