In 1987, countries of the world agreed to the Montreal Protocol, a treaty designed to phase out chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, responsible for destroying ozone in the stratosphere. The protocol has worked as intended in reducing these substances, and early healing of the ozone hole over Antarctica has been subsequently hailed by scientists.
But the study by Ball and his colleagues focused instead on the lower latitudes where the vast majority of humans live.
There, the scientists found a relatively small but hard-to-explain decline of ozone in the lower part of the stratosphere, the layer of the atmosphere that extends from about six miles to 31 miles above the planets surface, since the year 1998. Meanwhile, the upper stratosphere has been recovering.
The precise cause of the trend is unknown but could be related to changes to the stratospheric circulation, which has a large influence on how ozone is distributed, said Ryan Hossaini, an ozone expert at the University of Lancaster in Britain.

And there is obscure data that suggests that the atmosphere is composed of 3-4 dimensional hexagonal cells like a bee combs. Where does that fit?
Yeah. I’m guessing they didn’t know why it had a hole in the first place. I suspect they get their exercise by jumping to conclusions.
I’d be embarrassed to write that article........
Same “Scientists” that said 2 months ago that it had fully recovered? They need to stuck with jellyfish.
50 years ago they didn’t even know that there was a hole in the ozone layer at the poles, much less that it would form and heal in a cyclic manner.
How do they even know the lack of healing isn’t just an instrumentation issue? After all, the ozone layer that they are so worried about is only 3 mm thick (less than 1/8 inch). Who went up and measured the thickness of this transparent gas? Also, the ozone layer is about 8 miles up. What kind of accuracy can they get measuring a 1/8-inch layer of a transparent gas that is 8 miles away?
Pretty simple. Ozone is 3 oxygen atoms bound together which is not a stable molecule. The normal configuration is 2 oxygens bound together.
It takes energy, in this case sunlight to build these unstable molecules.
Less sunspots, less energy, less ozone.
Obviously fake news. I mean, come on folks - the science is *settled* after all! According to the libs we know all we need to know about how the climate works - that’s got to include the atmosphere and oceans after all. We know it is all Trump/Bush/Palin/big-oil/homophobe/islamophobe’s fault... Ditch them and it’s all rainbow gumdrops and sweet unicorn farts... /s
Perhaps the magnetic field at the poles allow charged particles from the sun to stream in and disrupt the formation of ozone molecules....

Not a problem. The poles are about to flip anyway, perhaps in our lifetimes. THAT should be exciting. Will the shutdown and reversal of the Earth’s magnetic fields affect the magnetic fields in our brains and cause massive memory loss?
“treaty designed to phase out chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, responsible for destroying ozone in the stratosphere. They don’t know that it didn’t heal itself. They don’t know that CFCs were responsible for causing it to decline either. They know that CFCs are heavier than air, too,& tend to seek lower levels.

Thanks BenLurkin. It was astonishing how a safe, inert product that was many years out of patent protection could so rapidly be replaced by a chemically similar product that was newly patented. In another ten years it will be going through the process of being banned.
Holes in the ozone began over the poles, right?
Ozone is created by lightning storms.
Not many storms over the poles.
So, we can say, global warming strikes again.
