I remember a Dem “explaining” to me that sure, the Dems of the past were racists but those who were racist were naturally attracted out of “true” Democrat party to join the hateful repub party. Also, “decent” repubs realized what their party “really was” (awakened) and fled to the egalitarian Dem party-paraphraising here but the claim was
that the parties essentially switched places???!!!!! Alrighty then! The Dems reason they therefore have NO REGRETS!
Silliest argument of the age. In truth Democrats figured out their evil was so abhorrent they had to project it on the Republicans. For their part, being a bit doltish and introspective, Republicans took the accusation seriously and weeded out racism from their ranks, driving racists to the Democrats and writing substantial civil rights legislation, at all times opposed by Democrats.

I think they teach that in college now. I know a lib that sais the exact thing, how 200 years of evil is actually republicans because they just magically flipped 100% during the southern strategy.
