You can still hear it blasting out of classic rock and golden oldies stations all over the world, and against all odds, Totos Africa has become a millennial anthem 35 years later.
The rousing rocker is enjoying a second life thanks in part to the internet, and web users have embraced the song as a guilty pleasure. One Twitter account called Africa by Toto Bot tweets lyrics from the song every three hours. There is a website devoted to playing the song on a continual loop, and there are countless covers and affectionate reinterpretations on YouTube, including an 8-bit version that makes it sound like a classic Nintendo game.
The tune even got some love during Grammy Week in New York. DJ Z-Trip mixed a portion of Africa with tracks from Drake and Rihanna into his DJ set at a Spotify party honoring the Best New Artist nominees.

The way Sweden is now, I can’t believe a band like Amon Amarth came from there.
Valhall Awaits Me
Amon Amarth
Blood gushes from the wound
The cut is wide and deep
And before I turn around
He falls to his knees
A clear song rings in the blade
When steel meets hardened steel
I hear the sound of wood that breaks
A swords cuts through my shield
I drop the shield and grab my axe
A weapon in each fist
The first blow makes the helmet crack
The axe cut to the teeth
I rip the axe from the head
Covered in blood and brains
Leave the body lying dead
Ready to strike again
My sword cuts through clothes and skin
Like a hot knife cuts through snow
I smile as the bastard screams
When I twist my sword
Sword in my hand
Axe on my side
Valhall awaits me
Soon I will die
Sword in my hand
Axe on my side
Valhall awaits me
When I die
Bear skin on my back
Wolf jaw on my head
Valhall awaits me
When I’m dead
I raise my axe above my head
My eyes stare in furious rage
Yet more blood will be shed
This is a victorious day
Blood gushes from the wound
The cut is wide and deep
As I turn around
I fall to my knees
Sword in my hand
Axe on my side
Valhall awaits me
Soon I will die
Sword in my hand
Axe on my side
Valhall awaits me
When I die
Bear skin on my back
Wolf jaw on my head
Valhall awaits me
When I’m dead
Yes, that’s pretty cool. As is this - “Gamen” (”The vulture”), by Garmana, from the mid-90s.

Forgot - English lyrics for “Gamen”:
King Vallemo was a wise old man.
He married off his daughter in a foreign land.
One day she stood in her bridal gown,
The next in bands of iron bound.
“And why do you do this to me?”
“For you were no maiden when you came to me.”
“Oh had I a trusty friend and true
To carry these words to my father now!”
Then the old vulture came to her:
“Let me be your speedy messenger.
“If I could get food for my young from you,
I could be there in an hour or two.”
“Then lay your young at my breast, if you will,
So that while you are gone they may eat their fill.”
“King Vallemo, here you sit free from sorrow.
Your daughter will burn at the stake tomorrow.”
“Fly away, old vulture, as quick as you can -
My daughter has married an honest man.”
“If you won’t believe what you hear from me
Look here at my claw, I am carrying her key.
” King Vallemo into the stable strode,
Saddled his black horse, and off he rode.
And when they came to the foreign lord’s hall
The black horse whinnied high up on the wall.
The black horse lifted his mighty foot
And struck the lord in his cruel heart’s root.
Then the king and his daughter sat on the black steed
And rode back home at a gentle speed.
You mean Peter Gabriel doing that and dressing up as a flower?
Excellent point. I was glad when Bill the Son moved out, taking his avocados with him.
Du Hast it’s not. Nice song though.
“Yatch rock” would be appropriate.
Yep, a metaphor too far.
Pretty good, but why do all metal singers have to sound like castratti or a cement mixer?
Posting almost 2 months late here, but I’m listening to “Africa” and I remember seeing this thread. I love that song. I was pregnant with my son when it was popular. “Hurry, boy, she’s waiting there for you”. Makes me cry every time I hear it. The music and the blending of voices is so rich. My son is soon to be 35 and is married with two children of his own. How time flies......
