Speaking on the decision of the Cleveland Indians to no longer make use of the mascot Chief Wahoo as their uniform logo from 2019 onwards, co-host of ESPN’s “First Take” Max Kellerman argued on Tuesday that the University of Notre Dame should also be among those sports teams that take note of the offense caused by their mascot and make move to change it. As well as wholeheartedly standing behind the decision of the Cleveland Indians, Kellerman next went one step further, drawing in the Notre Dame name as an example of another sports franchise that should show the same courtesy to the sections of society who believe their name to be offensive.
“Many Irish-Americans are not offended, but many are. And should that also change? The answer is yes, unequivocally yes,” Kellerman said.
“Pernicious, negative stereotypes of marginalized people that offend even some among them should be changed. It’s not that hard.” …

What about steel workers who are offended by the Pittsburgh Steelers moniker? Or the giant people who are offended by the Titans?
What about those people who work in a steam plant and are offended to be called Boilermakers.

This debate was settled in 1927, when Notre Dame withdrew its objections based on potential negative connotations, in an era of real anti-Catholic bias, and officially adopted Fighting Irish as the nickname of the school’s athletic teams. Like most liberals, Kellerman has no sense of history.
Kellerman is like 1984’s O’Brien, then; he believes that whomever controls the past is who will control the future.

The characterization of Irish immigrants as brawlers—especially if drunk— was common in the nineteenth century, and the early years of the 20th century.
The football team of Our Lady’s University was originally tagged with this description by a less than friendly press. Over time, Notre Dame developed a legendary team, who adopted the term with pride.
These days the fightin’ part is mostly identified with tenacity in the face of great adversity— which most certainly is a fair characterization of the Irish people in history.

I could be wrong but isn’t it possible that the nickname “Fighting Irish” derives from the heavy presence of Irish militia in the War of Independence fighting for George Washington or the all Irish militia units in the Civil War?
Without knowing for certain I wouldn’t assume it comes from Irish brawlers in pubs. But I don’t work for ESPN so what do I know?
