FULL TITLE: Moment distraught mom of a seven-year-boy films her son being cuffed by police and then taken for a psychiatric evaluation after school officials say he 'punched a teacher'

A Miami mother of a seven-year-old boy expressed outrage on Saturday when she saw her son handcuffed by police after he is said to have hit his teacher and then taken to a mental institution.

Mercy Alvarez was in tears as she saw her son leave the principal’s office at the Coral Way K-8 Center in Miami escorted by a police officer on Thursday.

The officer handcuffed the boy after school officials said he was acting up.

The incident was reported by the Miami Herald.

Alvarez has permitted the media to show her son's face. She has also stated her desire for the media to disseminate the distressing footage of her son being led away in handcuffs.

This child was suspended for TEN DAYS earlier in the school year. That is astonishing for a first- or second-grader. The article says “because he threw a tantrum,” but come on! My little kids “throw a tantrum” by lying on the floor crying.

I think the boy in this article was probably throwing a lot more than “a tantrum.”

Aww, what a special moment, capturing the first time her son is in handcuffs. I suspect that it’ll be FAR from the only time that happens.

Wow, that is a lot for a child. Probably throwing things around the room and worse. Sounds like he needs to go to a special school for children with behavioral disorders. Or will end up in one or worse. I don't like to think about when he grows up, and I don't know the success rate with these kids.

Some of these kids would not be doing these things with proper parenting. Some probably are beyond that.

Kids shouldn’t hit! Where did he get the idea it was ok?

I agree. We don't have any way of knowing whether the boy is psychotic or has just been allowed to get away with everything all his life.

It's also possible, as his mother claims, that he was bullied. I, myself, the dullest and most compliant of people (according to my kids), have wished I could vivisect various fellow students and consign them to eternal torment. However, violently attacking a teacher (if the school's report is accurate) is something else.

If one cannot handle the aggression of a seven year old child, they should not work around children.

If you are not allowed to physically restrain him and not allowed to suspend or expel him, really, what can you do? If he cannot be reasoned with (and many kids of a certain personality type cannot be) I don't know what alternative you have.

How about “YER otta here!”

That wasn’t until high school. The priests used that as you got a slap to the head, a pull of the ear and a kick to the butt.
“YER otta here!”

When I was in school we feared being caught whispering or getting caught chewing gum. Times have changed.

What happened to respect for elders or actually going to school for learning? Not that we didn’t have some idiot teachers who earned no respect but we would handle those issues as a family to discuss and question their behavior, not clobber them.

*Mom is looking into suing to get her payday.*

Once momma lawyers-up the kid kid stays in school....until the case becomes litigated. And that process can take years.

So, this 7 y/o will come back to the classroom where he disrupted the whole learning environment....with a chip on his shoulder that says, **You can’t touch me**.
So all the other students will suffer.

Any incident, how minor, momma marches in with her Ombudsman, lawyer, team of CFS social workers and raises holy hell.

And guess who pays for all her support system? Yep.

Any experienced PS teacher, can tell which kids [at an early age] are going to jail or end up killed, when they get a bit older.

Where do they get money for this; and momma’s manicure too. I don’t think food stamps pays for these services.

If I wanted incorrect spelling and grammar, I would hang out on DU. I thought Freepers aspired to higher standards.

“Still, it’s extreme to haul the kid away in cuffs, but it might be the only way to prevent him from going ballistic and hurting himself and/or others.”

You’re right. They should have put him in a straight-jacket.

For the second time in three months, school officials said the boy had misbehaved and 'threw a tantrum'

*****************

The best thing that could happen to this child is for him to be evaluated and treated.

"School have no way to punish kids anymore."

Especially since they have done away with Michelle Obama's lunch program.

It’s been said that, “the teachers are afraid of the principal. The principal is afraid of the parents. The parents are afraid of their kids and the kids aren’t afraid of anything.”
