I’m going to say this even if it gets me banned: you can go to Democratic Underground and read more intelligent replies than this. Why? Because they have a stake in popular culture. They know that it is popular culture than wins, eventually, at the ballot box. So they educate themselves in the arts, they go into the arts, they appreicate the arts, while the right sits around and writes things like “Bernstein’s music is insipid and amateur.”
And that is one of reasons this country is doomed.

The original West Side Story was stupid. Even back then, gangs were nasty & brutal. It was a fairy tale - emphasis on “fairy”.
The “arts” - such as they are now - consist of Star Wars and Star Trek remakes, combined with comic book hero movies. Movies are geared to international audiences. Hollywood is a bunch of corrupt, evil people pretending they are not. And listening to Bernstein’s music isn’t going to help anyone.

Movies have always been used to inculcate the populace, as well as to entertain. That's but one reason why the stinking COMMIES wanted to take over Hollywood, way back when. Thankfully they more or less failed; though some DID get their work ( most wrote the scripts though some were directors ) produced.
Once the studio system was crushed, it was BAR THE DOOR NELLIE and movies began to swiftly go downhill.
