Never got into Belew but I was a fan of Fripp with King Crimson before Belew joined.

Belew had started out on his own. Frank Zappa found him and immediately took him into his band. Bowie saw him with Zappa and signed him on when his contract with Zappa ended. Belew tells the story best, but Bowie had already taken him under his wing and they happened to run into Frank at a restaurant. Bowie told him straight-out that he wanted Belew in his band. To everything Bowie said, Frank would reply, FU Captain Tom. Ya gotta hear Belew tell the story.
I am sure you have heard more Belew than you know. After playing on Station to Station and Low, Belew moved onto playing with the Talking Heads. The founding members of the band approached Belew with an offer to replace David Byrne and make himself the front man. Adrian didnt like that situation and walked. Maybe then came King Crimson. Not sure. He worked on Paul Simons Graceland. And theres more, just cant think of it right now. He has had a long and illustrious career. He is still out there doing shows. He plays in a way that only he can. It is as if he was handed the instrument and without any previous exposure to it he figured out how to make it give out the sounds he wanted. He drums on the body, drums on the strings, presses and/or plucks the strings above the nut, loves to bend the neck (yes, bend the neck) and is the master of the whammy bar. One cool cat. Hes been playing live for 6 decades. Always plays with an infectious smile on his face.

Here is Belew, just he and his guitar, sounding as good as the three Beatles trading leads in The End (from Abbey Road). The song is called 1967, but I dont know why:
