i would use a program called Bitdefender. It got high marks in the PC Magazine roundup of AV software. You could add Malwarebytes free edition and run it once a week as a belt and suspenders approach.
I have been using Bitdefender on my machines for years with nary a problem. As you said, it gets high marks.
