Ditto. I run the subscription MalWare Bytes plus Spybot, which is free, on a occasion just for the heck of it.

MalWareBytes is good.

Thank you for posting this. My computer was attacked this morning and I was looking for a solution. I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran it and the problem is gone along with 53 others. Thanks again

The virus protection that comes with Windows, Windows Defender, is all one needs. There is no use in paying for or cluttering up your computer with anything more. Also periodically make an image of your computer using a program like Macrium Reflect so that in the unlikely event you get a virus you can easily restore it to pre-virus condition in about 15 minutes.

I had Norton Security free form Centurylink but uninstalled it as it blocked a couple sites I needed. I use free protection form Download.com. AVG is good but shuts of windows defender and you have to wait for it to do its thing when you turn a computer on which was annoying. Malware bytes and super antispyware free is good and I can run them at the same time. MRT and windows defender are always updated and I run defender at least once a week.

i would use a program called Bitdefender. It got high marks in the PC Magazine roundup of AV software. You could add Malwarebytes free edition and run it once a week as a belt and suspenders approach.

I’ve run FreeAV on all my PCs for many years:

“If you are on Windows (any version) the best protection against malware is to permanently disconnect your PC from the internet.”

Followed by NOT announcing the types of protection you use.

I was fortunate to purchase a lifetime license for malwarebytes back when it first came out.

Me, too!

Great advice.

I’d only add that if you do browse sites you’re unsure about use a Script blocker. I use No-Script in FireFox, which allows the user to decide exactly what services to run in browser and to see the other services the site is trying to run.

My problem w/ most anti-virus programs is that they do exactly what they are supposed to stop: slow down your computer, send personal information to 3rd party sites, and take over control of your computer.

I use a layered defense consisting of ZoneAlarm Ultimate, Malwarebytes, Ghostery, and AdBlock.

ZoneAlarm and Malwarebytes are worth paying for.

Ditto on Malwarebytes.

On a totally unrelated subject if anyone got an Axe gift set for Christmas, open it and look for the $2 off coupon on any Axe product. Coupon expires at the end of this month.

The single best thing you can do is use a Mozilla based browser (Firefox, WaterFox, Sea Monkey, TOR et al). Install the NoScript addon and keep it on the strictest setting, only temporarily allowing sites you trust. That and never installing any software from CNET alone can stop most shenanigans before they start.

I use Iobit Malware Fighter and Avast - both free. Tried Malwarebytes but it went crazy on me and kept running scans when I was in the middle of other things, so I deleted it. Tried it again a few weeks ago and it identified the Iobit program as malware, so I deleted it again.

I generally stay away from risky sites so I don’t need top of the line protection.
