Musically, 1978 was definitely the year of disco-rock.
Acts like The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Heart, Blondie and Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley scored hits by mashing-up guitars with mirror-ball beats.
The disco influence even seeped into country music a bit, as on Barbra Madrells excellent, boot-scooting single Sleeping Single in a Double Bed.
Hell, in 78 you probably could've gotten disco on top of your cheeseburger, nachos or pizza too if you asked for it.
Thats not to say every song had to pass the leisure-suit test to be a hit that year.
New wave, funk, singer/songwriter, reggae, punk, country, pop and heavy-metal sounds connected with listeners.
And uncut disco and rock each did too, of course.
Below are 40 songs from 1978 that continue to resonate.

I don't agree with all of his choices, but they were interesting!
Tell me your fav!
Thank God for disco! My baby got up and learned to walk to Donna Summer. She previously insisted n being carried everywhere at 15 months.
Toot toot, hey, beep beep!!!
That’s cute!
It was a pretty good era, the execrable disco era was thankfully fading, AM and FM radio were still going strong, and most of those performing in the late 70s had been strongly influenced by the greatest decade in American music, the 60s.
I’d have to give “Sultans of Swing” the nod, our introduction to the incredible talent of Mark Knopfler. But Tom Petty was on the rise and there was Blondie...
Ping. Because LEVON. Yay!
If you like Mark Knopfler and the Dire Straights you might really like The War On Drugs.

My HS graduation year! I remember I did love that Jackson 5 Destiny album. And the Grease soundtrack.
That was not my favorite Billy Joel album, but he is a favorite in general because he wrote, “And So It Goes.”
In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along
I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense
LOL, I don’t even have to click on it to know what you’re referring to.
That was funny.
Was just about to ping you!
I like “Life’s Been Good” and “Miss You”.
Honestly, I’ve never heard some on the list.
What an amazing playlist! I absolutely cannot pick just one. :-)
As if I needed to be reminded of my age this year.
Goodbye 30s.
Disco got a bad rap.
When I think of albums from ‘78 that I still play frequently, I’d have to put Alan Parsons’ Project “Pyramid” at the top of my list. Still my favorite album by them.
