It’s been tough out West as well. I asked the gang around the wood stove at the feed store today what they thought of the government shutdown and they looked sort of puzzled and said, “which government? Our government?” Which just goes to show you how traumatic the thing has been - those poor fellows stricken by amnesia and the scar tissue grown thick over the gaping wounds of the lack of paternal guidance from DC. Added to the broken, listless ennui and the enervation is an additional problem. One of them sez, “Don’t give a crap.” Yep. Constipation. They’ll be selling FDA-approved bran muffins for silver bars pretty soon around here. I had no idea it would be this bad.
How melodramatic. Offten is correctly written “often.”

Not sure if that falls into this category but American English spelling was still in the process of being standardized at that time.
By “at that time” I mean the civil war era, from which the letter this satirizes derives (Sullivan Ballou?).
