Maybe art is just in my head today, but I think this IS art!

And for those who enjoy art, too, I've just finished The Paintings of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec to the music of Offenbach. The first part is for art historians - roughly chronological. The second part is just the cafes.

A lot of art is a gimmick. During the rennaisance, paintings were ordered by the percentage of colors so that the artists would use the more expensive colors. That’s a gimmick. Art, to me, is balance and color and line and cleverness. Some of the photography here is rather brilliant. But then I think Andy Warhol’s Campbell Soup can was as much art as Andrew Wyeth.

I have always read that great art, besides requiring great skill, incorporates universal themes into the particulars it represents.

You may not agree with that definition.

I don’t care much for Warhol, but I can see why you would mention him. The artwork pictured above, and Warhol’s work share a sense of cleverness. I doubt either will stand the test of time.

That’s because the 1952 Moulin Rouge movie used Offenbach’s music! Excellent catch!

The first part is from the opera, the second part is from the 1952 movie.

Offenbach and Johann Sebastian Bach get too much attention that should go to P.D.Q. Bach.
