Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on recent remarks made by Russian president Vladimir Putin:
Russian president Vladimir Putin is making some waves with his recent statement equating communism to Christianity. He said that communist ideology is very similar to Christianity, crediting Soviet communism for preaching freedom, brotherhood, equality. Though he admitted that religious persecution took place under Soviet rule, he nonetheless lauded it for its ideological commitment to these ideals.
Pope Francis himself said in 2016 that it has been noted many times that it is the communists who think like Christians. By that he meant the communists profess a commitment to the poor.
So is Putin saying the same thing as the pope? Not at all.
The pope was saying that although the communists have adopted the rhetoric of Christianity (with regards to the needy), they have done so dishonestly: He said the communists have stolen our flag, meaning they have ripped off our legacy to serve their own interests. In fact, he pointedly said in 2013 that The Marxist ideology is wrong.
Putin believes that the state should serve the poor. That is not the Christian way: people must serve the poor, albeit there is a role for the state. The family constitutes the best social capital,' Pope Francis said a few years ago in his trip to Ecuador. It cannot be replaced by other institutions. In doing so, he was enunciating the Catholic principle of subsidiarity, meaning that those closest to the problem are best suited to fix it. That is an anathema in Soviet discourse, something shared by Putin.
If Putin were right, then the most communist nation in the world would also be the greatest champion of the poor...

Above all other reality there exists one supreme Being: God, the omnipotent Creator of all things, the all-wise and just Judge of all men. This supreme reality, God, is the absolute condemnation of the impudent falsehoods of Communism.
“On Atheistic Communism”
Pope Pius XI - 1937
The Soviets took the brunt of WWII and it’s possible American history elides that. As for the rest, Russia is a whole lot more responsible for the defeat of ISIS than you hear in the political rhetoric of “our” victory over ISIS.
I don’t want to make Russia an enemy again, so have no interest in hating the USSR back into existence.
There are some “Christians” that think the same.
Yes and neither do most Americans.
That doesnt mean Russians are going to oblige you though. The vast majority of them are the ones who want the Cold War and empire back. Go visit and talk to them for yourself.
And the problem with Russia trying to revive the USSR? They will also have to relive its collapse!
As I wrote before, watch closely in the coming decade: as the system , 5 foot 7, Vladdy Poots and his cronies have set up unravels as the USSR did, and all his geopolitical moves (allying with Iran, buddying up with Assad beyond defeat of ISIS , propping North Korea, chumming with the Turks and Sudanese, helping Cuba and Venezuela, and unleashing chaos in East Ukraine) will backfire.
When it comes to the Pope it is the same.
Tell that to the purged, the dead thru starvation and imprisonment in gulags.. Prick.
Communism is theology without a deity to back it up. All things are to be taken on faith, and the great promises of a heaven shall be fulfilled here on earth. But if you do not work hard and strive to fill the niche set for you, it becomes a purgatory or even an unshirted hell.
“Justice” without mercy or appeal.
But so far as comparing Communism to any “religion”, Marxism more nearly resembles the ideology promoted in the Koran, and lacks only the deity to act as a primary “enforcer” of the discipline necessary to keep any form of socialism going.
And ok, hes totally wrong.
I was referring to Putin.
That's because they caused WWII by allying with Hitler. Without Russian supplies and the non-aggression pact there is no way Hitler could have invaded the West. That they fought, after being attacked, to avoid being exterminated by the Nazis, after the West had been overrun with their assistance, is not exactly meritorious, no matter how much FDR and the Western Allies tried to excuse their treacherous ways in the spirit of allied harmony.
I don’t care what the F Francis says, and if Pope Bill Donohue has taken up his case, I don’t care what Pope Bill Donohue says either. Shame. I used to like him when South Park was trashing him.
That is their right. Have we received any more truthful education in the West?
Reuters: Why should I believe them? Their sterling track record for Truth?
So what? It’s not like we defeated them. Their country fell apart. Our country is about to fall apart. Give them a break.
Wow. Even with Trump’s victory, the downfall of the likes of Harvey Weinstein in Hollywood, the advance of the pro-life cause even during Obama and solidifying in our courts, a jumpstarted economy -
You’re still on the Putin-pocalypse bandwagon. Or you watch too much CNN. There is no difference between Putin and Soros at the end of the day. Both are headed for their downfalls.
Ok go ahead.
I love America. She wasn’t made for quitters. And it’s for Russia’s sake if anything (and China’s and everywhere’s) that America succeed. She is still young and growing.
And there’s no such thing as utopia on earth anyway. What are you? Commie?
Putin is not a communist.
That’s classic Putin’s pre-election lip service to the left designed to poach communist voters. Works great for him for 10+ years. You won’t hear any of it after late March.
“” “” That’s because they caused WWII by allying with Hitler. Without Russian supplies and the non-aggression pact there is no way Hitler could have invaded the West.”” “”
Hmmm. Poland has signed similar pact with Hitler and invaded Czech with the Germans but didn’t get a fraction of blame Russia did. What’s wrong with that? Maybe you should either condemn Poland or tone down on Russia?
