Nancy Kerrigan has very little to say about ‘I, Tonya’
Boston Globe ^ | January 11, 2018 | Dan Shaughnessy

Picked-up pieces while wondering whether “bomb cyclone” and “survive the ground” have ever been used in the same sentence . . .

■ For the record, Nancy Kerrigan has not seen “I, Tonya” and doesn’t care to discuss the cinematic softening of Tonya Harding.

“I, Tonya” is a terrific film, perhaps Oscar-worthy, and Harding is on a redemption tour 24 years after her goons kneecapped Kerrigan before the Lillehammer Olympics. Tonya was a guest of honor at the recent Golden Globes and the subject of a TV special that aired on ABC Thursday night. Dollars to doughnuts she’ll be at the Oscars.

This had me wondering what Kerrigan thinks about the whole thing. Kerrigan, after all, was a victim of Harding’s dysfunctional life. The only daughter in a working-class Stoneham family (her father, the late Dan Kerrigan, was a welder who worked three jobs so Nancy would have ice time), Kerrigan delivered one of the clutch performances of all time at Lillehammer in 1994, winning a silver medal just a few weeks after she was attacked by Harding’s gang of nitwits.

I gave her a call this week. (I had a 20-year-old at-a-glance phone book and hoped my “Kerrigan” number was not for Joe Kerrigan.) Incredibly, Nancy answered my call on the first try.

I congratulated her on raising three children with her husband/agent, Jerry Solomon, and maintaining her dignity during this pop-culture-driven redemption of Harding. I asked if Kerrigan wanted to comment on it.

“Not right now,’’ she said. “I really have nothing to say about it. I haven’t seen anything. I haven’t watched anything.

“I’ve been busy. I was at the national [figure skating] championships this week so I didn’t watch the Golden Globes. I haven’t seen the movie. I’m just busy living my life.’’

Kerrigan is a whiner. She can drop dead.

And Nancy Kerrigan has never told us why she hit poor Tonya Harding in the knee with a stick. Kerrigan had everything; wealth, beauty, Vera Wang-designed skating costumes. But she couldn't land a triple Axel.

No no Kerrigan did not have wealth. Middle class regular Stoneham, Massachusetts. Compared to Tonya she had wealth. She did live very close to the rink in Stoneham. No girl other than Tonya could land that triple axel, however.

Kerrigan was a good skater but not the best (compared to other skaters at that level and time) and was not really a gold medal contender. Neither was Tanya Harding. Maybe silver or bronze all things being equal, and Harding would not be on the podium in any event.

What Kerrigan had.....good looks and loving parents, things Harding did not have. Those are the things that eat away at the soul of people like Harding.

It was obvious by her performance that the Silver Medal was a gift to Kerrigan for the BS of the Harding deal. The judges were far too generous in their point awards.

Nancy Kerrigan was marketed as Little Miss Goodie Two Shoes.......then she had a torrid affair with her married coach, broke up his marriage, and ran off with him. IMHO Nancy ended up being a far more trashy skank than Tonya.

Nancy also acted like a spoiled brat after the Olympics and complained loudly about appearing as the guest of honor in a Disneyland parade. She should have been grateful for the honor but she wasn’t.

It is not a good story. What would she have to say about it?

IIRC, Kerrigan is still married to him. She might be a homewrecker, but trashy skank is a little strong.

There’s no advantage whatsoever for her to comment on it at all IMO.

My cousin was at her stoneham parade. Also, there was a giant mural of her in the famous leg extended pose put up on the street side of the stoneham rink after her silver win, and someone graffited pubic hair. I guess it took them awhile to fix it. To this day, i suspect Tonya lol!

I had missed this side of Nancy. Is it in the film?

The media loves those who are transgressive. There should be no surprise about this.

Oksana Baiul won the Gold then, and rightfully so.
Wonder what happened to her?

There is no Nancy in the film except for what Tonya (Robbie) says to the camera about her and some why why why footage.

Not a terrific movie, not Oscar worthy, characters are portrayed as one note, especially the mother. They came off as very one dimensional, almost cartoonish. And the format of the film was the characters in turns talking to the camera as if being interviewed. Bottom line, just not very interesting.
