Chelsea Manning, the former Army private convicted of giving classified government documents to WikiLeaks, is running for the U.S. Senate in Maryland.

Manning, a 30-year-old transgender woman born as Bradley, filed the paperwork on Thursday, the Washington Post reported.

She was convicted in 2013 of 20 counts for releasing more than 700,000 classified government documents. She was released from prison in May last year after serving just seven years of her 35-year sentence, thanks to clemency from President Obama...

Manning's sentence was commuted, he was not pardoned, therefore he remains a convicted felon.

How is it possible that he is even eligible to vote, much less run for federal office.

Obama pardoned it, its free as a crazy bird.

His sentence was commuted, I don’t think his felonies were erased.

Clemency, not a pardon. The felony convictions and Dishonorable Discharge stand, but Manning has been released from the federal prison.

Clemency, not a pardon.

Thank God I did not know that. But I am not sure that will bar it from becoming a senator, its not like there are any standards.

Since his sentence was commuted (he was not pardoned), his convictions stand and he is not eligible to run for public office.

How is Bradley going to appear as he never violated the below requirement (excerpt from linked column) with his military oath ?

I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." (Title 10, US Code; Act of 5 May 1960 replacing the wording first adopted in 1789, with amendment effective 5 October 1962).

the post-Civil War Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits any person who has taken any federal or state oath swearing to support the Constitution, but later took part in a rebellion or otherwise aided any enemy of the U.S. from serving in the House or Senate.

Will be interesting to see this play out.

Subtle! Good find about the 14th Amendment prohibiting him from being a senator.

Funny thing is, he’d be “prohibited” from even being considered a democrat nominee IF he only talked to a female “inappropriately” ... but being an ACTUAL (homosexual) FELON who released classified documents (to the enemy (er, public) is considered a resume enhancement (er, requirement AND his only qualification) for higher orifice (er, office).

What will his biggest selling point to libs be? That he’s a tranny or that he’s a traitor?

I would propose that we actually go so far as to edit any fake news stories that use this newspeak to reflect reality.

See my post #34.

ROCKLOBSTER ~ In a sane world you would be proofreader for WaPo, Fake News Networks, etc. But then you would eventually be sentenced to the gallows, for the capital crime of attempting to edit those useless, filthy propaganda rags so that they might be again considered readable/credible/unbiased investigative journalists.
