One conceivable advantage is the ability to seriously protect “the boys” with a cup and a number of layers of Kevlar, without noticeable visible evidence. Can’t do that in trousers.

Not new. Tried about 40 or 50 years ago. Went over like a lead balloon. It DID get a write up in a news magazine at the time.
