Sears sold off their valuable franchises. Diehard, Craftsman, etc.

They sold off Allstate Insurance back in the 1990s. That was a major one.

In addition, Sears management got rid of the catalog. No only was the catalog fun to browse through, it was the harbinger to what Amazon is doing right now and what Walmart is attempting to do.

Sear's management just wasn't farsighted enough to see the importance of that segment of their business and follow through.
