The long war could be between Islam and the West. Hard to say what context he saw this in. From his time he might not have been able to make sense of what is happening today by his standards so he did the best he could.
I think many of us believe we are in a kind of cold war with Islam at the moment that has times of hot and cool. One day it could flame up to the point all Islamic countries get involved openly then so would all Western countries. No idea what countries like China or Russia would do.
Europe is percolating like a coffee pot just waiting to boil over.

Actually he states in a couple of quatrains that there will be a war between the west and Islam and that Europe will be saved by Prince Henry of France. Don’t know if there is Prince Henry in France.
