He Set a Spider on Fire. But the Spider Got Even (Apartment Burned in Fire)
The News Tribune ^ | JANUARY 08, 2018 | Don Sweeney

A do-it-yourself extermination gone off the rails Sunday ended up ousting residents from a California apartment.

A man set fire to a spider in the Redding apartment with a torch lighter, reported The Record Searchlight.

“It was a huge wolf spider,” Lyndsey Wisegarver, a caregiver for one of the tenants, told the publication. The flaming arachnid scuttled onto a mattress in an upstairs bedroom, setting it abalze as well, she said. The tenants extinguished that fire, but by then it had spread to a flag collection and window curtains.

By the time firefighters arrived around noon, the blaze had spread to a closet as well. Firefighters ended up extinguishing the blaze, which caused about $11,000 in damage and rendered the townhouse uninhabitable, Battlion Chief Rob Pitt told KRCR. There were no injuries, except to the spider.

“Then we throw it outside, where it belongs.”

I would do that when our kids were younger, but also part of me too wanted to be “compassionate”. Several years ago reading up on brown recluse spiders which look similar to some big brown spiders we get in our house I read where those spiders in the house that get “set free” in the backyard don’t do very well and they die. Seems there are “indoor” and “outdoor” spiders. I recall the article was by a scientist that studied spiders - not “Heloise helpful hints” type thing. But who knows.

The daddy long legs are welcome in the house to a point. Downstairs and in my office there are several in every room I suppose to catch the bugs that get inside.

Upstairs if they stay in the corners they are welcome until company comes over. Anything else usually meets it’s maker.

It’s bad luck to kill a spider.

“Remember that spider that was crawling on the wall that you threw your shoe at and it fell and disappeared?”

I was painting up under the eaves at our family cabin and just sort of reaching up to get up in a corner without looking and knocked a big spider off. I looked down from the ladder and the thing was huge. I thought about going down and killing it, but was too lazy to. Then thought “If I don’t he’s going to come back and terrorize me.” But I still didn’t go down there.

The next morning, going to put my shoes on inside the cabin (that sits on concrete blocks 2 feet up the ground) was a big spider in my shoe! With a little blotch of white paint on it!!

Ridiculous drive today.

Drove by major accident after major accident.

Then, for fun, ran over something that took out two of my tires.

Fine, I was getting new tires this weekend anyway.

But, terrible driving conditions today...

The guy didn’t have a broom? Or a shovel? Or a trash can? Those usually work. :D

Look, if you need to kill a spider step on it, don’t be an a-hole and set it on fire.
