The two-time national champion Nathan Chen, the veteran Adam Rippon and the rising star Vincent Zhou have been selected to represent the United States at the Pyeongchang Olympics next month.
A U.S. Figure Skating Committee on Sunday chose the 2016 United States champion Rippon, who came in fourth at the national figure skating championships on Saturday night, instead of the second-place finisher, Ross Miner. The committee takes into consideration a number of criteria, including overall performance for the season.
It will be the first Olympics for all three.
Rippons inclusion at Miners expense isnt unprecedented; the committee has made such moves in the past involving Michelle Kwan and Ashley Wagner, for example.

J still believe Americans deserve to shine on the world stage. Hope they win.
I*
Americans should shine at the Olympics, in outer space, etc...
Agreed. Go USA!!!!
Higher. Faster. Stronger. Or a different permutation of those words, is the motto of the Olympics. Prettier, smoother and more established (how often do you see an “upset” or a Cinderalla story) is the motto of figure skating, and, imho, the activity doesn’t belong in the Olympics. along with rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming, dancing on ice, and, I don’t know, are there any other subjectively judged “sports” under the banner? They’re even judged on the appearance of their costumes. And no newcomers ever win. Granted, they all have a following, but maybe a different forum.
Chen has a chance to medal. He was outstanding.
Um, there is NO WAY Johnny was not openly gay. Come on!
Getting into figure skating lately since my youngest wont play hockey like her older brothers wanted, because the uniforms dont have any glitter. Shes right, not even the Golden Knights have any. Hey, Elvis wore glitter!
Enjoying the sport but its frustrating. They get points for beautiful skating but its all about the triples and quads. I liked that Ashley who came in 4th and only gets to be the alternate.
There are straight male figure skaters? Who knew?
Johnny could probably make the Women’s Skating team today, though.
What about Rudy Galindo?
So, two yellows and a lavender. No room for straight whites on the team.
Go Russia. Go Germany.
What Would Brian Boitano Do?
That guy became the Richard Simmons of figure skating.......damn creepy!
In other words, the first one they asked and had the question answered. Most of the planet knew this (same with gymnastics) and didn't much care. This is ridiculous. What the hell does it have to do with being good in the Olympics? Do the athletes need to declare their sexuality now before being allowed to compete?
Oh, I know. NBC must be trolling for new personal sob stories about the athletes to tell instead of spending their time broadcasting the actual sporting event.
Rudy competed at the World Championships but not the Olympics. I think he could have made the 1998 team, but he retired to do the ice shows.
Or with that British Diver in the Summer Games, when the camera kept panning to his “husband”.
While Weir may have technically speaking been “in the closet”, the closet door was certainly open. :=) Having the fire department on standby during his performances was a pretty obvious clue.
I’m surprised the ice didn’t melt from below him, he was so flaming.
The sob stories are almost unwatchable. My least favorite part of the Olympics.
