The so-called “Southern strategy” comes from a 1968 book by Kevin Phillips. he noticed the demographic trend going on in the South and suggested that this would be a good place for Republicans to focus to build a victory coalition.

Democrats have always seen blacks as less than human. This is why they were pro slavery, pro Jim Crow, and against civil rights. This is ALSO why they are pro welfare, and affirmative action. To them blacks are somehow less human than whites and can't compete on a level playing field. Democrats also think blacks are sex crazed animals and need someone to provide them with birth control and abortion serivices.

Republicans believe that if the playing field were truly equal (color blind), that blacks would rise to the challenge and compete with whites. They see black people as their equals, not betters, deserving of the right to vote, to be free, and to go to the same neighborhood schools. Dems are in favor of forced busing to ship white suburban children to black inner city schools because they don't think blacks can learn unless they are sitting next to a white child.

As for the so called Southern Strategy, look up the 1968 Presidential election facts. A third party candidate (George Wallace) carried the South, SPLITTING THE DEMOCRAT VOTE and throwing the election to Nixon. How did Nixon win if Wallace split the Republican vote? The Southern Strategy was to sit back and let the Democrats tear themselves apart. When the Democrats finally realized they could no longer win elections, THEY went after the black vote because they saw blacks as stupid enough to forget everything Republicans had done: end slavery, end Jim Crow, end segregated schools, voting rights act, civil rights, etc.
