Trebek had been hosting a music program for the CBC in his native Canada when High Rollers went into production.

That show was shot in an “in the round” theater, so they were unable to use cue cards. They tested a number of hosts on their ability to memorize the entire 60 minutes of material.

Trebek was the guy who passed that test.

I remember the set. Big glowing numbers on the wall, an oversized craps table in the middle, and the "just past her prime" Ruta Lee, coming over to give ol' Alex a big kiss kicking up her left foot, while garbed in an elegant gown. Unfiortunately, I understand the original video tapes were erased.
