We discovered Amazon Prime streaming early last year. I dumped TV in 1997 and just started streaming on demand via Wi-fi. My family leapfrogged the whole cable/satellite tv thing.

I’m on contract until May this year.

Their internet service — the only one of the three services I use, to include security system and cable TV — was so spotty last year that I had to order AT&T internet to back them up.

Comcast is my most expensive bill, and they want to raise rates?

I shall be a cord cutter.

I believe 5G cell data is coming out soon.

If so, I am looking at going back to a portable hotspot.

I had one a few years back and despite being only 3G it worked well and was very handy.

Home / work / on the road, there was your regular network and no guest accesses.

Granted, with the Trump administration laying the groundwork for gutting federal and state oversight of an already quite dysfunctional and broken cable and broadband market, you can expect a lot more where this came from over the next few years.

No, no, no, no, this is a good thing! Free markets! Smaller companies will start poping up all over the place because well, free markets with the now little to no oversight, we can trust Comcast to do the right thing as well, can't we? lol.

In a nutshell how does cutting the cord work?

From what I can surmise, I need some hardware like a hulu product (one coming out with a DVR from what I hear), an ISP (which might still be my cable provider) and a streaming service.

As to the service I understand the on demand services such as NetFlix and Amazon Prime. But I also hear that Direct TV now offers streaming with local channels (or do I require a digital antenna?).

Any insight is appreciated.

Obviously because the FCC removed Net Neutrality, just like the raise that went into effect right after it imposed it. (By the way, has your town raised the taxes on cable recently? They will...)

Aside from cellular providers, there are other broadband providers (sat/local wide band radio) which cover the vast majority of the country. Expect data caps on them soon, so the next provider will roll out with their option.

Amazing how the free market actually works.

My Comcast internet bill just went up. We dropped the cable and phone several years ago.

Paying more to watch more and more commercials. Cable TV is loaded with them.

With cord cutting setting records, why doesn't Comcast feel the need to actually adapt to changing markets? It doesn't have to. The company is securing a bigger monopoly over broadband in a growing number of markets thanks to telcos that no longer think it's worth it to upgrade aging DSL lines.

That means there are more markets than ever where if you want a decent broadband connection that meets the FCC's 25 Mbps definition of broadband, Comcast is your only option. As a result, Comcast knows that it can simply jack up the cost of broadband as well to counter any TV revenue losses without being punished by the pesky nuisance of competition.

This is what I don't understand about the cord cutters.

Most of the companies that provide bundled television content also provide internet services. So when they start experiencing diminished returns on the bundled tv side, what's to prevent them from raising the cost of broadband access to make up the difference?

My community has only Comcast and Centurylink as Internet providers thanks to the nitwits on the City Council handing out exclusive franchises. A locally owned ISP is literally at the city limits and offering an all fiber optic system with gigabyte speeds, but is stymied from entering the city by the franchise. Local govern franchises simply create monopoly or near monopoly conditions that assure higher prices, less selection and poorer service. Internet service needs competition.

I have a tivo with a cablecard and get the Silver teir from Spectrum, which includes a broad lineup of basic channels and HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime, and 100Mbps internet.

I have my own tivo and cable modem, so only pay for the cablecard (about $3 a month) and the service.

Everything including taxes is $114.99.

It’s still too expensive but the teir lower is notably inferior, and not that much cheaper.

BOL!

We cut our Comcast tv monthly outgo cable last June. we are saving over $100 per month in spite of about $25 specific channel add on’s of our choice.

Several relatives and friends in the past week woke up and started asking me how to get away from Comcast. The latest price increase has awakened them, finally.

I have an internet only contract with Comcast until April 2018. I know they will ream me out come April. How do I know? I signed up for 25mbs but via speed tests I can see Comcast is giving me 75mbs which I don’t need or care about.

I suppose due to the end of Net Neutrality? But common sense says as people dump ESPN, pro football, cable in general....That Comcast will try to rip off its internet users to make up for the losses.

I went from $144+ from Time Warner/Spectrum to $42 internet + $25 for Sling TV which gives me more channels then cable. They keep adding more without the price increase.

$144 to $67 with more choices plus I use a Roku box and get all kinds of shows to watch along with Netflix and Amazon Prime shows. I use a over the air antenna for free tv. Go to http://www.tvguide.com then What’s on for channels in your area.

Actual network TV has improved since digitalization took place, so I’m cutting the cord on TV once my Commiecast contract expires. I might keep the Internet portion, however.

Commiecast: biggest crony capitalists around.

When the television stations went to digital the television stations were given I believe five extra channels to broadcast with since they are now digital. In my area the stations do not used those five extra channels I think the government ought to take those back and hold them in a pool until someone comes along and can use them. This will provide us with a competitor to Comcast and the other giants. Just imagine getting all those extras with some true competition. I have no idea why no one does this maybe there is a technical reason.
