No one believes in firmware anymore, it’s all got to be “the internet of things”. Smart tvs (reporting to the home office what your viewing habits are, how many people watch with you, etc.) and more. Why does a coffeemaker have to be on the internet?

I don’t know about killing us, so much, as being a nearly perfect means of obtaining the most personal information to be stored in a database against the day when the owner needs to be blackmailed. Something like that is already happening - a key Senator or Representative or government functionary finds his or her every sexual fantasy, kink, and perhaps even video of the activity in the hands of, say, a Hillary Clinton. Because that’s exactly what the WHODB and the FBI files were, and what the Steele dossier’s Pee-gate tried to fake.
