You might also find interesting the fact that Caracas, Venezuela too had a monster quake during that same 2011-12 period which killed around 20,000 people. Our quakes killed far fewer because the territory was so sparsely settled. James Audibon was living in that wilderness area studying the birds and wrote about the quakes, and the first steamboat was attempting to proceed down the Mississippi to New Orleans. When the Mississippi ran backwards at one point, it was there to have the experience recorded. A good time was had by all. /s
