Infant bed-sharing deaths in N.J. are at a record high. Now lawmakers may take action.

A key state Senate committee will hold hearings in early 2018 to explore preventable causes of infant deaths, in part a response to an NJ Advance Media investigation into deaths that occur when parents share their beds with infants.

The announcement by the state Senate Health Committee Chairman Joseph Vitale, D-Middlesex, comes as latest statistics show 41 infants suffocated while sharing a bed in 2015 -- the largest percentage of bed-sharing deaths reported in the state a single year.

The NJ Advance Media report found the New Jersey's Child Fatality and Near Fatality Review Board had sounded an alarm about bed-sharing deaths since 2000. The board every year urged hospitals to adopt standards to educate parents and medical professionals.

It is none of the government’s business how families sleep. None. Zero. Zip. Zilch.

Sober mom and dad in bed at the same time.

The Mrs and I would put the babies between us then knees and foreheads together put an arm across to each other and pull the blankets over create a little padded hothouse for them to sleep in.

(As is so often the case, physicians who claim we shift 125 times a night (or whatever that ridiculous number is) are mostly full of...bedpan dredgings.)

Difficult problem. Newborns need nursing every 3-4 hours at first, and mothers are very exhausted. Putting them in prisons would be similar to the French Foreign Legion shooting its sleeping fireguards.

Knock, knock .... I’m here from the State of New Jersey to inspect your bed practices. That’s OK, don’t mind me. Just act natural and do what you would normally do in bed; however, remember that unless you are a member of Congress, Hollywood, or rich elite, I can and will cite you for any actions that endanger children.

We’re not going to stop all problems and make the world perfect. Commie-fascists and gossiping neighborhood pecking order hens will never learn.

It really works. Personally, I am a sucker for sleep. All my friends were up so much in the night for 5-6 years with each kid. Not me, unless they were teething or sick, in which case I want to be up for them. The other 360 nights a year we all bleeping SLEEP! :). I wish more people understood how kind and easy and lazy it is to set it up that way. (And guys don’t really need mama for the full 8 hours... After couple time they often are quite ahem resting.)

We do what you posted with our 2 month old.

It’s really fun having a tiny baby between us in our cozy bed.

And yeah, I can totally hear her breathing because her face is inches away from mine. Any hiccup or burp wakes me up!

Plus, we can hear her pooping. It sounds like a rushing flood from a cloudburst, but made of pudding. We address that issue immediately.

Well, baby poops do make a unique noise, and I have been conditioned to respond immediately, lest there be consequences!
