Biologically speaking, she is long in the tooth for a first child. Having a child with a birth defect caused by missing, damaged, or extra chromosomes is increased in older women. The risk of having a baby with a chromosome problem is 1 in 525 at age 20 years; 1 in 385 at age 30 years; 1 in 200 at age 35 years; and 1 in 65 at age 40 years. That's a considerable increase over younger first time mothers. Also, older first time mothers are more prone to gestational diabetes and other birth complications.

She's 36. From the viewpoint of how many years she has left for bearing healthy children, that's "long in the tooth". A woman's best child-bearing years are her 20s. Prince William married Kate when she was 29, and she immediately got started producing heirs.
