Sociologists study the tall grass to make just these kinds of distinctions, IMO.
I don’t agree that the conclusion SHOULD be correct, but I can see a valid basis for drawing it, given a sociologist’s job is to apply the rules as constituted - not as they should be.
It is very legitimate to push back - and this sociologist MAY actually be doing so by pointing out how ridiculous the new rules are.
Please take none of this to be directed at you just because I’m about to express strong disagreement....
I cannot express how vehemently I disagree that it’s their “job” at all. Rather a lot of people have busied themselves and banded together to impose themselves where we’d probably be better off had they just talken expression through dance instead.
These folks are kinda like lawyers: the more of them there are the more they need to screw up stuff just to be employable. Where they are different is in how we should deal with them (artificially reduce the number of lawyers by forced unemployment and you only make the ones that remain more powerful, instead with lawyers the only recourse we have is to dilute the value of their base skill set by making the core of legal education common to all high school graduates ... that would make many lawyers much less employable as well as increase the likely pool of truly competent lawyers).
The “... Studies” phenomenon, arguably propelled to greater depths of mendacity by suicidal Cultural Marxism in the West, has even turned the touchy-feely swamp that Sociology had become into a full on ETD (education transmitted disease) that now infects many legitimate disciplines. Even some Engineering departments are now showing early signs of the cancer from scattered snippets I’ve seen.
If every “... Studies”, the whole lot of them, disappeared we’d mainly notice because the stuck on stupid factor would ease up without them constantly picking at the wounds, never mind them managing to find ever new injuries people hadn’t realized were previously issues (like “chaste kisses” from heroic guys being harassment).
