The trial seemed utterly ordinary. A 19-year-old maid swiped a womans three rings worth at least $5,000 from a house she was cleaning in Fairfax City, Va., but later returned them after the police questioned her. She was charged with felony grand larceny.
What the jury did was extraordinary. They felt bad for the young woman, pregnant with her second child, and agreed that she had made a dumb, youthful mistake. Reluctantly, they convicted her of the felony. But the fine they imposed was her daily pay as a maid, $60. And then they took up a collection and gave her the money to pay the fine.
....................
After she was arrested, Mendez Ortega spent eight days in jail until she was released on $1,000 bond. The jury was not told that. The jury also was not told that Mendez Ortega apparently is not in the country legally, as Copeland said she was told by prosecutors, because it was not relevant to whether she stole the rings. I think its relevant to the case, Copeland said. She said the penalties of a felony conviction, such as not being able to vote or buy a gun, would not be actions available to an immigrant in the country illegally anyway.

Pregnant with her 2nd baby - probably the 2nd anchor baby...she’ll never get thrown out.

Take up a collection...
For a one way bus ticket to Guatemala.
Not relevant?? Illegality leads to illegality.
The jury was censored from most of the information of the case. The number one tool of liberals is misinformation though lies, censorship and propaganda.
so this is in liberal northern Virginia. Liberal jurors made their political statement, didn’t they?
Can’t imagine a jury would have the same reaction in some other parts of the country. Just saying.
I thought McAwful is asking felons to vote.
I live in Portland and the list of what a maid stole from me is up to about 20k and I can’t get the police to even do anything...detective finally called the owner of the maid service after I sent him the phone number and apparently all he did was listen to the owner’s spiel about how hard they try to prevent stealing. I was told unless I had them on camera stealing there was nothing I could do.
My stuff is gone, they were the only ones with access except my husband and myself and yet I can’t do anything except complain.
Shurly no “Hazel” (Shirley Booth)!
The trick is this: you have to get someone who doesn’t have a chip on their shoulder about being a maid. I have a nice German lady who does great.
More future dreamers ..yeah.
Hire a lawyer. Yesterday. Only way you’re going to see any results.
Very poor reading comprehension on the part of far too many FReepers here. You didn’t even have to read the article to see that the girl is not in the country illegally. It’s in the excerpt. Yet you immediately jump to the conclusion that she’s an illegal and everyone piles on.
“Gracias gringos tontos.”
sorry to hear of your ordeal with this.
Did you get any benefit from homeowner’s insurance for the theft?
I have to remember to have my coffee before posting.
Actually I'm sure she is a parasite on the community and is using a fake Social Security # false papers and drives unlicensed and uninsured on roads she doesn't pay for.

AnAmericanMother is right. Hire a lawyer Aria, then sue the maid service. They might settle with you just to avoid the bad publicity.
That is in the article and excerpt. It is worded ham handedly, but it is more than apparent to those with good reading comprehension that NOT IN THE COUNTRY LEGALLY means she is an illegal alien.
Maybe the owner would settle to avoid the publicity ...that’s my only hope. Right now I am in contact with the owners insurance company.
