He’s lying, of course. He was well-established as a young character actor from the late 50s. You can see him in shows like Naked City, Hallmark Hall of fame tv plays and dozens of other things. He also worked regularly in theater. He didn’t just appear in The Graduate. That stuff is all made up by him and studio publicists.

Watch The Graduate then immediately follow it with Rainman. You'll see little difference in these two character portrayals.
