What happened, happened. You seem to feel a need to sugarcoat the political machinations of northern interests, whereas I merely see them for what they are. Southern slaveholders argued for slaves to be counted one by one, in their entirety, for purposes of apportionment. Northern interests didn’t want them counted for even 3/5 of a human being, that was a compromise hence the name. It did dehumanize black people in the literal sense no matter how much you dislike that notion. It was the slaveholders who argued for their full humanity, history shows this no matter how dissonant that may sound to ears all too accustomed to hearing north good south bad. You want to get into motive rather than end result? Well, neither one of them were concerned about anything but political power. Facts are facts, and they’re difficult things.
