If Tina Fey can do it, why not her 30 Rock co-star Alec Baldwin? And if their SNL commander-in-chief can honcho her Broadway show, why not his as well?
Those were the questions raised Monday when Baldwin told Howard Stern he has Broadway in his sights for a solo show based on his Emmy-winning impersonation of Donald J, Trump, with Lorne Michaels producing. Michaels is also producing Feys musical adaptation of Mean Girls, slated to arrive on Broadway in the spring.
Baldwin was interviewed on Sterns Sirius XM program to promote You Cant Spell America Without Me, his new book, co-written with Kurt Andersen. The parody purports to tell the really tremendous inside story of the presidents first year in office.
We may take the book and make it into a one-man show on Broadway, Baldwin said, adding that the book was written with the blessing of Michaels, who controls the rights to the impersonation. What Lorne did do is give me permission to write this book, Baldwin said. My rendering of (Trump) is his intellectual property.
Baldwin added that Were all sick of the whole Trump as source of comedy thing, and I am too, but Kurt goes to another level.
Baldwin has a lucrative model for the possible show: In 2009, Will Ferrell brought his SNL impression of George W. Bush to the Cort Theatre in Youre Welcome, America. A Final Night with George W. Bush. The three-month stand was a smash hit.
Baldwin has had a celebrated stage career that includes five Broadway shows, including A Streetcar Named Desire, in which he played Stanley Kowalski opposite Jessica Langes Blanche Du Bois and Amy Madigans Stella.
Howard Stern went into his own incessant Trump bashing mode after the election. Unlistenable.
I'd buy a ticket to that one
Just another broadway show with a white actor. Doesn’t Alec know that’s racist? Should be a minority in the lead role.
Maybe it will work if its FUNNY! I remember Van Meter who mocked JFK. That was not mean spirited—but really funny. That comedian faded quickly, after JFK was shot. Can Alec Baldwin do it? Yes. There is a market for “Hate Trump” pieces —lots of rich liberals will buy tickets and wear the TeeShirt. All I ask is make it funny—not just hate filled diatribes.
Well, I haven’t see the Baldwin SNL shtick on Trump, but I know Trump is pretty good natured and will laugh if it’s a good-humored character of himself. But Trump really despised Baldwin’s portrayal which tells me it is a mean-spirited hit/hate piece on Trump. Makes sense because Baldwin is a dyed-in-the-wool Leftist activist who I have no doubt hates Trump.
BTW, Baldwin himself looks more and more like a cone-head character out of Star Wars or something. Somebody should do a hit piece on him.
Politics aside, no, really, Baldwins Trump impression is REALLY REALLY POOR.
He scowls, he purses his lips. Neither approximates Trumps look. And he plays Trump as dumb and overtly racist. Trump is neither. Its a single, offkey note. The Emmy voters are 99.9% anti Trump. Of course they like him calling their enemy President a racist idiot. Its the only reason he won. Not even the writing was particularly funny.
Contrast that with MacKinnons Hillary. She owned her. She played her as the misanthropic power hungry beast she is, recognized as such by both left and right. She deserved that Emmy. She has not had a successful character since, though. Shes too camera muggy in her this season portrayals. Ruins it.
And if you want a spot on, funny Trump impression, look no farther than Darrell Hammond, whose Trump was absolute genius. He did him for years on SNL. He should have been allowed to keep the part. (He also did Bill Clinton perfectly for decades on the show).
Totally agreed that Baldwin’s impression is terrible. It would be one thing if he was good at it. I haven’t seen Hammond’s impression, but he was great as Al Gore. Agreed that Kate does a great Hillary impersonation (I think her Bieber impersonation is excellent too).
Phil Hartman (RIP), did the best Reagan and Clinton.
He could remake Postcards from the Edge and call it, “Voice mails to my Daughter”.
