Polytechnique

Last Wednesday marked the 28th anniversary of the "Montreal Massacre", when fourteen female students at the École Polytechnique were murdered by a man known to posterity as "Marc Lépine". Much followed from that terrible slaughter, including various "gun control" measures - and the official annual commemorations that, a quarter-century on, are attended by as many eminences as Remembrance Day or Dominion Day. A decade or so back, I heard the Quebec broadcaster Marie-France Bazzo remark how strange it was that, after all these years, nobody had made a work of art about what happened that day. And shortly thereafter someone did.

It was a film called Polytechnique, which in 2009 was well-received in the francophone world. You don't actually have to know much French to watch it, for reasons I'll discuss below. This piece contains some of the broader reflections on the event, and on James Cameron's Titanic, that I made in my book After America:

To start with Mme Bazzo's bewilderment: As I pondered the matter, I wondered how many novelists, playwrights, film directors have tried to address the Montreal massacre, and found themselves stumped at the first question - What is this story about?

To those who succeeded in imposing the official narrative, Marc Lépine embodies the murderous misogynist rage that is inherent in all men, and which all must acknowledge.

For a smaller number of us, the story has quite the opposite meaning: M Lépine was born Gamil Gharbi, the son of an Algerian Muslim wife-beater.

DIVERSITY killed those women.

If you’re a honky male the decades-long training you get is to NEVER stop ANYthing a diverse person is doing or “YOU’RE A HATER”.

If the killer had been a fellow honky they would have beat him to a pulp and those women would be alive today.

And thats where I permanently checked out.
Otherwise I might feel the need to blow something up.

What is this story about?

Probably not what the pinkos want it to be about.

What is this story about?
________

“As I wrote in Maclean’s eleven years ago:

“The defining image of contemporary Canadian maleness is not M Lépine/Gharbi but the professors and the men in that classroom, who, ordered to leave by the lone gunman, meekly did so, and abandoned their female classmates to their fate — an act of abdication that would have been unthinkable in almost any other culture throughout human history. The ‘men’ stood outside in the corridor and, even as they heard the first shots, they did nothing. And, when it was over and Gharbi walked out of the room and past them, they still did nothing. Whatever its other defects, Canadian manhood does not suffer from an excess of testosterone.”

Being the only walled city in North America didn’t keep out the evil of islam, nor insure the boldness of its francophone “men”....

The shooting took place in Montreal, not Quebec City.

...it's better to have the social norm of the Titanic and fail to live up to it than to have the social norm of the Polytechnique and sink with it.

True.
