How hot does it have to be to smelt iron ore? And dud the ancients have capabilities?

Smelting temperature of iron is around 2,900° F, so no, the technology was not likely available. However, the forging temperature is 2,200° F, so a meteorite could be formed into shape. Coal and bellows could very likely reach that temperature.
