One of the funniest bits of 1960s television was when William F. Buckley called out Gore Vidal as a homosexual during an on-air debate during the 1968 Democratic Convention. The line was:
“Now listen you queer, stop calling me a crypto nazi or I’ll sock you in your goddamn face, and you’ll stay plastered.”

I never know when I will need to resurrect these critical observations, golll-eee.
Tough to advance in that marine corps.
That was rumored for many years. In fact, the main rumor was that Rock Hudson and Jim Nabors were an item. That probably wasn’t true being as that Hudson died of AIDS in the early 80s and it appears that Nabors didn’t have the disease.
Correct. Vidal was well-known as a outright pervert, well connected in Hollywood homosexual circles which was still filled with closeted “straight” men. Some of the names were shocking.
Nah, instead he released Christian themed albums and sentimental patrons looked the other way I guess.
Heck, anyone with a clue knew he played same-sex “pitcher and catcher” since the Andy Griffith days. Nabors had an aggressive publicists and his fame died off enough so that people would not take notice after that.
He even bragged about telling all known associates that he played for the same team. Not a very closed secret, his fame withered after the 60’s and was so “lovable” in syndication, that people were afraid to find out so they downplayed that stuff.
Surprise, Surprise, Surprise - Jim Nabors Pomoted
Was that after Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell?
Scott Weiland, Stone Temple Pilots?
Pyle was a Vietnam Era Veteran.
2007. I think DADT started in ‘93.
He was promoted well after the implementation of DADT but curiously, Pvt. Pyle was never deployed to Vietnam.
I didn’t know that.
I do have theory. Its so that a given species remains competitive with other species. Consider a life form that was nearly immortal. It would be difficult to sustain new generations since all the old ones still around would keep the newborns from getting enough to eat. Meanwhile the other species keep on evolving until they out compete the immortal one that could not change with the times.
Good theory, but I wonder why all living things weren’t designed to just turn on and off, like a light switch being flipped. Why make literally tens of thousands of ways to die, most of them painful and tragic. It’s a rhetorical question, of course.
I read somewhere that Pvt. Pyle was a Rear Admiral.
I saw that live, I was just a kid but I knew something incredible had just happened. Thought they were going to Duke it out right there!
I was 13yo when I watched that live. I was a political junkie at that age, too.
