The French fought bravely in many instances -- they hadn't changed fundamentally as a nation from WW2. The end was a forgone conclusion, would have been no point letting the Germans get a hold of all those boats and ships.

The French fought bravely in many instancesYes, during WWII, the French successfully defended Dakar against a French invasion.
They lost to the British in Syria, the Germans in France, the US in North Africa, and the Thais in Cambodia. Almost forgot the Italian victory in Southern France.
