Before World War II, "The Pearl Fishers" was a staple in the world's opera houses. It seems to have disappeared since then. "Carmen" has completely eclipsed it.

When Mike Gorbachev came to the US in the mid-Eighties, Van Cliburn did this number as an encore. Gorby and his people brushed away tears as they snag along.
It's a great example of Russian lieder writ large.

Around 5 years ago I did a retrospective of Rachmaninov's works at the Canteen. Sergei was able to do it all: chamber music, symphonies, concertos, opera and lieder.
His operas all came from Pushkin, his favorite author, who was viciously anti-Semitic. This is why Rachmaninov's operas have dropped out of the repertory. It's a shame. He was that good.
Sergei's art songs, however, survive. About 15 years ago we did some of his lieder at the Seattle Chamber Music Festival, and it was a hit. He was right up there with Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Samuel Barber.

Knowing his sense of humor, it would not be a surprise to me if he was! (RIP)

OK...my favorite Rock stars are dying, but they are a few years older than me.
Dmitri was 10 years YOUNGER than me, and it has hit me real hard.
