From there to be looted/stolen by corrupt ‘officials’ and sold on the blank market once more.

Exactly my thoughts.

The caption described how the master bathroom was decorated with a “breathtakingly beautiful” marble torso.

A search warrant issued last month describes it in different terms: stolen property, a treasure excavated from a Phoenician temple.

It is now in the possession of prosecutors in New York awaiting repatriation to Lebanon.

Maybe a rich guy’s bathroom is not the best place to display ancient sculpture but sending the art back to an unstable Muslim country where ISIS might blow it up to appease their moon god next week might not be so smart either.

I think private citizens should be able to own archaeological artifacts, but they should be made reasonably available for scientific study and/or public viewing.

Important pieces rotting away in people's bathrooms or being pulverized by ISIS is not much use to anyone.
