I Let an $800 Alexa Robot Creep Around My House Like a Tiny, Mechanical Zombie

Have you ever fantasized about having the weather read to you every morning like it was a beautiful Shakespearean sonnet? That’s probably the best reason to choose UBTECH Robotics’ new Alexa-enabled Lynx robot over the Amazon Echo—that, or you’re very, very lonely.

Lynx’s glowing eyes let you know when the robot’s online, listening to your voice, and processing your commands.

Whether you’re interested in talking to Google’s Home platform, Microsoft’s Cortana, or Amazon’s Alexa, there’s already a lot of options for smart speakers. All of those assistants are now accessible through third-party devices, which is great, because quite often a smart speaker does double-duty as a family’s stereo. But why limit a smart speaker to just responding to your demands and playing music?

That’s a question UBTECH is hoping to answer with Lynx: A 20-inch tall humanoid robot that relies on Alexa for at least part of its smarts. Did I mention it will cost you $800? For the price of having eight Amazon Echo speakers strewn about your home, you can instead have a tiny robot companion that can follow you around your house relaying sports scores, reading weather reports, streaming music, checking on your pets, and even teaching you basic yoga moves.

I haven't seen a ping list for privacy but it may be a good time to start.

Shame they pulled the thread, The Register is not required to be excepted as far as I know. I do it because it is habit.

I guess I need to repost.

If you don’t want something following you around the house you can get Joi’s great great great grandmother in the “Gatebox”. The AI lives in a kind of coffee machine looking device and is available in Japan for somewhere around $4,000. I believe they sold the first 100 units on the first day of ore-order and sold the rest of the initial run of 400 units within the first month.

A repost of The Register article on Google’s recording of your phones’ travels.

I see no good purpose to any of this stuff. Don’t want it in my house.

I'll bet it won't answer your prayers. Image and video hosting by TinyPic Ben, who is that? Elrond or Galadrial's husband, Joey. He looks pretty holy. Or Elfish. Vulcan? Spock?

I remember when people on FR thought Amazon was a retarded business concept that would never catch on.

Bezos will be taken down, primarily because he is attacking the Trump Administration via his paid propagandists at the Washington Post, and Trump is just getting started on dispatching some PINOCHET style payback on DOMESTIC ENEMIES.
