Why The NBA Will Eventually Overtake The NFL In Popularity And Why It Matters (2year old article)
Forbes ^ | December 12, 2015 | Roger Groves

The NBA is outdueling the NFL in global popularity. There are now about 100 international players in the NBA. The NFL is too distant to be counted in a two League race. The NBA’s critical mass is an economic mass as well. The NBA quite adeptly realized that changing the playing times can increase the international viewership. It increased the number of Sunday early-afternoon games. A 12:30 pm game allows a growing European fan base to watch the games in early evening (7:30 pm). They then have time to finish the game, have a glass of warm milk or alcoholic equivalent, and go to bed in time for work in the morning.

According to Matt Brabants, NBA’s senior VP of global media distributions and business operations, those NBA games have become “appointment viewing” in the 114 countries that the NBA has connectivity . That includes not only Europe, but also the Middle East and Africa. The latter has staggering growth potential.

The NBA also has an inherent economic advantage over the NFL. The highest operating cost for both is salaries of the players. Just as obviously, NBA teams have much lower operating costs because they only need 22 percent of the players needed in the NFL to produce the product. The NBA’s 5 players and a 13-member active roster compares ever-so-favorably to an NFL team that starts 22 different players on a 53-person active roster. Profits are larger when costs are low and revenue skyrockets. Put differently, the NBA needs less revenue to be more profitable because their operating costs are so much lower.

The more profitable one league is over another creates marketing fund advantages as well.

You and I certainly are not disagreeing on that point.

I think the winner in the NFL implosion is likely to be Major League Baseball.

NFL and NBA will lose fans, but I don't think MLB will gain very many. It's still too slow-paced and requires too much intelligence for typical short-attention-span fans of other sports to get into. It seems to me that you either grow up with baseball or you never really get it.

Actually the saving grace of the NBA may be the Euro players, who at least reduce the thugball aspects of the League.

Soccer is gaining also, especially people who follow the Premier League and Bundesliga and the other big European Leagues.

6 foot five bow legged culturally enriching African Migrants from Europe will re-define “Thugball” as we know it.

I don't "get" soccer. Too slow paced, too long of a game.

I've seen a few Rugby games, that's a MAN's game! Wish it was on TV here more.

Soccer too long? It’s 90 minutes give or take 10 minutes of injury time. A football game what takes 4 hours?

I’m loving watching the Gators basketball team led by a Russian-Israeli, Egor Koulechov.

The last pure sport for you is the NHL.

Amazing individual talent, fast with very few commercial breaks. A team sport with hard hitting and passion for winning.

That’s cool if you like Basketball or the Gators or some Russian Jew-ish dude.

To each his own, I suppose.

Yes, I think baseball and hockey are the likely winners. (And in general, they have the smarter athletes too.)

Except that as an example, I am a lifelong Spurs fan (since they moved from Dallas as an ABA Franchise and played in the old Hemisfare arena; James Silas-pre-Gervin even). Maybe more than any other team, the Spurs operated like a family, mentoring each new batch of players. and that helped the players generally avoid trouble. But with a Cucked Pop coach making it all about politics, Spurs/NBA Fan No More.

Been a long time since I watched a game of pro-hoops. Occasionally enjoy a college game though.
