I’ve heard those weird rumbling booms coming from a clear sky here in Maine on two different occasions, and other people I know heard them, too.
However, it was about three or four years ago, when other weird sounds were heard from the skies around the world, including in Hamburg, Kiev, Costa Rica, Australia, and many location throughout America.
Starting fluid does that well. (Ether)
A friend of mine put starting ether in a 1953 Plymouth. That car ran like a dragster until it ran out of gas. Then the engine fell apart.

Sounded like a possible electric pulse weapon to me.Seriously! I NJ bought a month ago.Two LOUD electrical crackle crackels preceeded a boom .It wasn’t a transformer cause my buddy heard the same thing 5 miles away.

Never saw that before. Wish I’d known about that a few times in the past!
They do testing of things at the Picatinny arsenal in Northern NJ. Years ago I worked there and they had proto-type EM rail guns that they tested (inside I think). If you are anywhere near that - you may be right!
