President Trump complained Sunday that the father of one of the three UCLA basketball players who were arrested in China for shoplifting had played down his role in winning their release, and that he therefore should not have interceded with China’s president.
“I should have left them in jail!” the president tweeted.
Trump’s tweet drew a quick backlash on social media. Many expressed incredulity that a sitting U.S. president would publicly regret having come to the aid of American citizens being held by an authoritarian government.
Among Trump’s sharper critics was Rep. Adam Schiff, (D-Burbank) who tweeted back, “How can someone in such a big office be so small?

You are right. Pres. Trump did the right thing, and maybe it is only that one idiot boy with the ridiculous ringleted hairdo who. egged on by his father, is the ungrateful punk. Let’s hope. I think those young men, all 6 footers and black, must have stood out like a sore thumb while stealing sunglasses in those Chinese stores, all eyes must have been on them. Stupid is too kind a word for their behavior, and the President of China must regret his leniency now, too. They were representing our country, and let their country down, and since all were black, let down their race. The college should permanently suspend all of them from future sports events. I’m so angry at them for abusing their privilege.
Yes, that was a dumb tweet. When you say that you should have left them there, you’re effectively wishing for them to be beaten and tortured, maybe to death, by Chicomms.
